Sapta Sagaradache Ello Tribute: கண்கள்

A Poem Tribute to the warming story of "Sapta Sagaradache Ello" 

அவள் வாழ வேண்டுமென

விலகி வந்தேன்

Hi, வணக்கம்,

Generally, I don't prefer sharing or commenting on the Big Boss Dramas 

But even for a reality show standards, I admire contestant Muthukumaran and Anandhi for encouraging a positive attitude and correctly utilizing their talent on the public platform instead of promoting a negative content in here.

Today, there was a skit featured in the show and Muthukumaran emoted a 5minute single take dialogue written by Kalaignar Karunanidhi. This dialogue was performed by the legend legend Sivaji Ganesan and is featured in the movie "ராஜா ராணி" .

Purpose of this blog :

Kalaignar wrote this above dialogue based on a poem in "புறநானூறு".

This is one of the finest dialogue i have ever heard in Tamil after Parasakthi Poompuhar and Manohara 

I have tried to transcribe the entire dialogue sequence from this skit as much as I can.

நாடகம் (The skit):

ஆனந்தி: கதை ஒன்று சொல்லுங்கள் அத்தான்

முத்து:சொல்லட்டுமா? சோழன் மகளை சேரன் மணந்தான். சேரனுக்கோர் செல்வன் பிறந்தான். அந்த செல்வன் இந்தச் சிலையை மணந்தான்;

ஆனந்தி:அத்தான் நம்ம கதை வேண்டாம் வேறு கதை கூறுங்கள்

முத்து:நடந்த கதை கூட

ஆனந்தி: நடக்காத கதை ஒன்று சொல்லுங்கள் அத்தான்

முத்து:நடக்காத கதை சுவைக்காது கண்ணே,உனக்கு ஒரு காதல் கதை சொல்லட்டுமா?

காவிரி தந்த தமிழகத்து புது மணலில் களமமைத்த சேர சோழ பாண்டி மன்னர், கோபுரத்து கலசத்தில் யார் கொடிதான் பறப்பதென்று இன்றுபோல் போர்தொடுத்து கொண்டிருந்த காலமது.

அந்நாளில் போர் களத்தில், தாய்நாடு காக்க தாவி பாய்ந்து செத்தார் தந்தை என்ற சேதி கேட்டு, தனல் மேல் மெழுகானாள் தமிழகத்து கிளி ஒருத்தி.

அனல் போலும் கண்ணுடைய அயலூர் சென்றிருந்த அவள் கணவன் வந்திட்டான்.

புனல் போக்கும் விழியாலே அவள் போர் செய்தி தந்திட்டாள்.

தந்தை களம் பட்ட செய்திக்கோ தவித்தாய்? என்றான்.

இல்லை அன்பா! முல்லை சூழ் இந்நாட்டு படைக்கோர் வீரர் குறைந்திட்டால், நல்ல உடையில்  ஓர் கிழிசல் வந்தது போலன்றோ? இனி தடையின்றி நுழைவரே பகைவர் என எண்ணினேன்.

அடைபட்ட கண்ணீர் அணை உடைத்தது அத்தான் என்றாள்.

அவன், குகை விட்டு கிளம்பும் ஒரு புலியென, புகை விட்டு குமுறும் எரிமலையென, பகைவெட்டிசாய்க்கும் வாள் எடுத்தான்.

சூழ் உரைத்தான். சுடர் முகம் தூக்கினான்.

சுக்கு நூறுதான் சூழ்ந்து வரும் படை என்றான்.

நாடு மீட்காமல் வீடு திரும்பேன் என்றான்.

நங்கையோ நகை முழக்கம் செய்து நடந்திடுக கண்ணே! என்றாள்.

திருப்பி வருவேனோ இல்லையோ, எதற்கும் இப்போதே ஒரு முத்தம்.

இந்தா திரும்பு என்றான்.

கொடுத்தான்.பின் தொடுத்தான் பகைவர் மீது பாணம்.

போர் போர் போர் எனவே முழங்கிற்று முரச ஒலி.

பார் பார் பார் அந்த பைங்கிளியின் உரிமையாளன் பகைவர் மீது பாய்ந்து கொல்லும் வீரம் பார் என்று பட்டாளத்து தோழர் எல்லாம் வியந்துரைத்தார்.

அந்த கட்டாணி முத்தாளும் கண் வழியே சிரித்திட்டாள், களத்தினிலே அத்தானுக்கு அடுக்கடுகாய் குவிந்து வரும் வெற்றிகளை கேட்டு விட்டு.

கோட்டைகள் விடு பட்டன.

எதிரியின் குதிரை கால்கள் உடை பட்டன.

வேழ படை முறிபட்டது.

வேல்கள் பொடி பட்டன.

என் கொற்றவன் படைகள் கொட்டும் பேரிகை கோடை இடியென கேட்குது கேட்குது என குதித்திட்டள்.புது பண் அமைத்திட்டாள்.

வீரர்கள் வந்தனர்.

வெற்றி உன் கணவனுக்கே என்றனர்.

வேந்தனின் தூதுவர் வந்தனர்.

வாழ்த்துகள் வழங்கினர்.

வீட்டோரத்து தோழிகள் வந்தனர்.

வெற்றி நீட்டோலை வாசித்து மகிழ்ந்தனர்.

அந்த அழகி ஆனந்த கண்ணீர் பொழிந்தாள்.

அப்போது ஏன் அந்த மனிதன் வந்தானோ? இழவு செய்தி சொல்வதற்கு.

என் அருமை பெண் பாவாய்.

கண்ணல்ல கலங்காதே.

களச் செய்தி கடைசி செய்தி கேள் என்றான்.

அந்தோ! மாவிலை தோரணம் கட்டி, மண விழா மேடை தன்னில் வாழ்விலே ஒன்றானோம்   என்று சொன்ன கண்ணாளன் மார்பிலே வேல் தாங்கி, நல்ல சாவிலே வீழ்ந்து விட்டான்.

ஆவிதான் போன பின்னும் உயிர் வாழும் ஆரணங்கு,  அச்சடித்த தமிழ் பதுமை கூவி அழுதாள்.

கொத்தான மலர் அந்த குடும்பம்.

அதை கொத்தாமல் கொத்திவிட்ட கொடுஞ்சாவை பழித்தாள்.

இழித்துரைத்தாள்.

இனி என்ன மிச்சம் என்றும், கனி அழுகி போனதென்றும் கதறி அழுதாள்.

பனி வெல்லும் விழி காட்டி, பனை வெல்ல மொழியுரைத்து, பள்ளியறை கவி பாடும்  நாளெல்லாம் மண் தானோ?

இனி இது தூங்காத கண் தானோ? என அழுதாள் அத்தானின் பிணம் கிடக்கும் களம் நோக்கி தொழுதாள்.சோகத்தால் வீழ்ந்து விட்ட அவள் காதில், வெற்றி வேகத்தால் பகைவர் தட்டும்  போர் முரசம்  பட்டதுதான் தாமதம்.

கெட்டதுதான் கெட்டது நம் குடி. முழுவதுமே பட்டொழிந்து போகட்டும் என எழுந்தாள்.

மட்டில்லா புகழ் கொண்ட நாட்டுக்கே அன்றி வீட்டுக்கோ வாழ்வேன்? என்றாள்.

வட்டிலினால் நாள் பார்க்கும் விதம் கொண்ட தமிழ் நாட்டு மாதரசி, தொட்டிலிலே இட்டு தான்  வளர்த்த தூய செல்வன், அட்டி இன்றி கல்வி கற்க ஆலமரத்தடி ஆசானிடம் சென்றிருக்கும்  நினைவு கொண்டாள்.

அங்கு சென்றாள். அம்மா என்று பாய்ந்தான் அழகுமிகு மழலை மொழி அன்பு தங்கம்.

அப்பா, தாத்தா ஊர் திரும்பினாரோ என்றான்.

திரும்பி வந்து சாவூர் சென்று விட்டார்.

கரும்பே நீயும் வா என அழைத்தாள்.

என்ன வாங்கி வந்தார் என்றான்.

மானம்! மானம்! அழியாத மானம் என்றாள்.

மகனே அதை சுவைக்க நீயும் வருக என்றாள்.

வந்து விட்டான் குல கொழுந்து.

குடும்ப விளக்கு எரிந்து கொண்டே கூறுகின்றாள்.

எதிரிகளின் படை எடுப்பால் நம் குடும்பம், தலை உதிர்த்து விட்ட மரமாகி போனதடா தம்பி,

கவலை இல்லை.

களம் சென்றார்.

மாண்டார்.

ஆனால், இந்த நிலம் உள்ள வரையில் மானம் காத்தார் என்ற பெயர் கொண்டார்.மகனே நீயும் உன் தோளிலே பலம் உள்ள வரையில் பகையை சாடு.

பரணி பாடு.

இது உன் தாய் திருநாடு.

உடனே ஓடு என தாவி அணைத்து தளிர் மகன் தன்னை, சீவி முடித்து 

சிங்காரித்து, ரத்த காவி படிந்த வாள் கொடுத்து, சென்று வா மகனே செறு முனை நோக்கி என வாழ்த்தி விட்ட திருவிடத்து காட்சி தன்னை போற்றி பாடாதார்

A Hero with Thousand Steps -The Finale

When I started this blog series,  I had one question in my mind. Why should I write this?

Initially I wanted to pour down my admiration as an audience but eventually when I retrospect on how am carrying this series, am thinking do I have any takeaway from Vijay's dance career?

Should it be just an admiration or would be understood as a hero worship blog that might satisfy a particular fan base or is it a take away of a life lesson?

Though I cant speak for others, I have a life lesson to be learnt of his career and trying to incorporate within myself and have explained in final portion.

Before that in the Previous post, we saw some songs from The Vijay Genre and would like to continue in this blog with a kutty story.

Kutty Story - Master

Vijay is as cute when he dances and also when he doesn't dance much as well. He moves along the song with liveable moments that captures our heart. I feel he doesn't prove or force any frame in the song even though he's a great dancer.

This Kutty Story song lives in my phone, heart and in my conscious always. Whenever you have a bad day or someone hurt you, Just close your eyes and listen to Vijay's voice. For me Vijay's dance is as comforting as his voice for decades that I have an entire playlist of his voice. 

His grace will be felt through the entire song and is so positive. Its a must to hear song.

Another Honorable mentions is Kadangi Kandangi from Jilla.

Though Vijay has sung for Surya in Periyanna , I feel he can also voice to other actors even when he's in Politics.

Kutti Pulli Kootam- Thuppaki

This is also my favorite, This isn't a normal hero worshipping intro song.

The song is set in an open ground as the hero ,an army officer relaxing  light moments with his colleagues around the lake on vacation. It never feels as a sequence of some memorized /disconnected steps.

Vijay knows that he's neither Prabhu deva or Raju sundaram but seen as an wholesome hero who has to carry the emotions +story forward in his songs and he understands this assignment from his first few movies. Thats why i feel his songs stand out from other actors.

Comparing this with recent songs -Chellama(from Doctor) or Jalabula jung (fron Don) where the steps would be kind of forced to prove that hero can dance or it'll be on face that some difficult sequence are being performed on screen or emotionless hard steps and no chemistry between the leads would inhibit me enjoying the song.  (No offence to SK sir, He's also a good actor but depends on  how a particular song being choregraphed/conceived)

The moment where he sings below lines -

"சுத்தி மேக மூட்டம் leave'u விட்டா ஓட்டம்,

சாலை எங்கும் சேலைத் தோட்டம்

ஹேய் நானும் இப்போ Mumbai वाला

நாளை முதல் thousand वाला"

or 

"அழகிகள் உலவும் தெருவெல்லாம் திரிந்து

அதில் மிக அழகியை விரும்பலாம்

இருந்தும் அதில் தான் சுகமெல்லாம்"

En Jeevan - Theri

I have covered almost entire Vijay sir career and expressed how much I love him as the dancer but this song isn't about his dance. This entire song is about him protraying how to respect a woman in his life. Often Women in Tamil cinema songs are being portrayed in hyper sentimental or emotional frames that often turns out cringe moments.

But in this entire song, I love the respect portrayed by Vijay and Atlee. How to carry a girl, her entire family along with his new born. I think till now I haven't came out of the lines.

"இன்பம் எதுவரை நாம் போவோம் அதுவரை

நீ பாா்க்க பாா்க்க காதல் கூடுதே"

The way he holds her feet or expresses joy when the kid says "Appa".

He carried himself as both the husband and the father into the song.

For me, at any moment, it wouldn't be complete without vijay songs

My travel song list will have "அர்ஜுனரு வில்லு"  ,

My poems are inspired from Vijay's emotion "ஆண் கண்ணீர் பருகும் பெண்ணின் இதயம் ,சதை அல்ல கல்லின் சுவரா"?

My loneliness is comforted by his lines -

" கையில தான் நீ புடிச்சாலே, பிரச்சனை தீராத்தே

தூக்கி அத நீ எரிந்தாலே ,டென்ஷன் ஏறாதே"

My instant mood enhancer -"சூர தேங்கா அட்ரா"

He has a song covered for every situation

I can cover hundreds of his songs like "தமிழ் song" from pokkiri or "கோடம்பாக்க ஏரியா" or "ஜிமிக்கி பொண்ணு" but I would like to conclude the series with above song on a high emotional note.

Take away /Conclusion:

Cinema is a visual magic ,Need to create an identity or a factor to improvise yourself or for being relevant as hundreds of eyes are watching.

I feel Dance has been part of Vijay's Onscreen presence and that has been the differentiating factor. 

Love the talent you wish to acquire so that It becomes your identity and keep improvising it until it becomes a part of you.

I too have incorporated this attitude in the work I love to do.

I hope this blog would've provided the same satisfaction, I felt while writing this.

If you split up Vijay's Dance career, you can categories the songs in this themes- Causal Love songs / Mood Enhancer/ Mass songs / Melodies. But I would like to explore an another dimension that's never been highlighted i.e. the Vijay Genre

The Vijay Genre

Every once in 10 years (1994/2004/2014/2024), If you consider his career(be it acting or dance),It has been constantly upgrading into another platform. People might criticize that he can do only commercial genre but Staying and Owning that space while establishing the career isn't easy.

Around 2004, It was the time when Vijay transformed from Thullatha Maanum Thullum and Kushi mode into full fledged action. So the songs during this time frame are being tailored especially for Vijay.

This was the time, Tamil Cinema had a huge influx of next generation heroes - Dhanush,Simbu,Jayam Ravi,Shyam,Aarya who was competing into his space. But, none of these actors had a conflicting career with Vijay and even after the years, he's the entertainer.

So what's is this Vijay Genre ?

Songs that can be tailored only for Vijay and if you refer any moment from that song, you can always reminisce how beautifully Vijay has carried over the song , same like when I say "Singa nadi Pottu" or "Oruvan Oruvan Mudhali" you know whom it refers to. 

Let's consider sample set of songs for this case study, I want you to visualize the dance moments as I explain, do revisit the song before reading.

Yarathu Yarathu - Kavalan

This song is set in mood where Vijay will be searching for his lover whom he hasn't seen yet. He'll be expressing through cute emotions over the entire song sequence.  At no point in song, he does over do or sound artificial. This is what I mentioned being stand alone.

There's a scene where he informs Asin that he's going to meet his lover and falls over the bench. I think this is Vijay's Moondram Pirai Moment. I wonder if any other actor has carried a sequence like this with grace in the millennium period. Also never a moment in movie , he shows up his mass attitude or heroism even in songs. Everytime I watch, I see the character's search and pain in this song and feel only Vijay would be able to carry these emotions.

The entire movie is like a poem though it didn't get the proper attention. 

Bambara kannu from Madurey - 

One of the common aspect I noticed in Vijay's dance movements is that He's the only hero who has kept lengthy single-shot dance sequence and the dance will be infused with comical or situational moments than being a mere memorised dance steps.

In Bambara kannu song, If you observe 2nd stanza starting with "Kannu rendum" ,it'll be a lengthy sequence with single shot moments shot with comical moments. Never in the song, you'll notice its a choreographed song step.

Nee kovapattal naanum -Villu

In this song, instead of complex sequence. The focus will be on establishing the chemistry between lead actors -Vijay and Nayanthara. With Devi Sri Prasad's lovely composition & voice, the song flows as cute moments between the pair Like he's irritating the heroine or doing some small hand movements. 

My favorite moments come around during "Punnagaikum sathathil alarm veipen ,Sunday kuda kathaluku velai veipen". You cant imagine any other hero performing his song as lively as Vijay.

There was a similar song from Jayam Ravi in Thillalangadi but if you compare both, you can say which one had better lead chemistry and being lively.

Antartica Venpaniyile (Thuppaki)

In Antartica song, entire sequence is shot in an stadium throughout as the heroine is shown as an athlete. Vijay will be dancing round the gameplay. Here ,the focus will be expressing to be around the heroine with Vijay in Background. Not sure if any hero could carried this with breezy moments or agreed to dance in backdrop. I loved the expressions on the lines especially the expression around the lines.

My favorite lines are around these lines

"உனைப் போலே ஒரு பெண்ணை
காண்பேனா என்றே வாழ்ந்தேன்
நீ கிடைத்தால்,
என் தேசம் போலே உன்னை நேசிப்பேன்!"

Pakkam Vandhu (Kaththi)

I know everyone loves "Selfie Pulla" from Kaththi but this is my special favorite from Vijay.

This isn't a duet song and its kept specially for the Vijay, the dancer in the movie.

Entire song is set in Airport and the energy is exactly opposite from the Yarathu Song , we saw earlier.

With HipHop Adhi Composition & voice and Anirudh music, it feels like 10mins songs is suppressed into 4mins song.

This song is a visual treat to watch.

I don't recollect that even after a decade, there's a song which energizes the moment as this song.

I enjoyed the moments in these lines whenever i listen and was my ringtone once.

"மனமே மனமே

ஒரு பொன்னை தேடி

நான் தொலைஞ்சேன்.

அட காதலால

Equally i loved the Aathi Enna nee song , especially the end sequence is must watch if you are vijay fan.

A Hero With Thousand Steps - Part 3

To stat with Today I want to start with another favorite childhood moment.

While restrospecting,I have often wondered what do I look forward in a Vijay song. Songs in Hero centric movies are targetted to entertain or elevate or to feel the love. (For Rajni - its Oruvan Oruvan Mudhali or Singam ondru purapattathey).

For vijay, Do you need a full fledged song to entertain? 

Around 2000s ,Vijay has ventured into the ads.My personal favorites are Coca cola ads or Docomo ads. There are 10 different ads created by Rajiv menon during that time (Along With Shreya,Amrita Rao and Katrina kaif).

For me, his screen presence of 30seconds was sufficient. I have attached the 2 of favorite ads below. 

       

The multi segmented song was wrapped up in a nice bundle and comprised into an ad. Every second of this ad was enjoyable, hope you too liked it.

Maatu Maatu Nee - Youth 

Most of the vijay songs are instant mood elevators. Likely examples are Kutti Puli Kootam or Kodambakkam or Alapooran Tamizhan area.

Now coming to this song, the song choregraphed within a village Thiruvizha setting the mood. Energy levels of Vijay and Priyanka were complementing each other along with Imman and Anuradha sriram's voice.

I personally enjoyed the karagam sequence and the sequence where Vijay's Ghilli transforms into Rose on Priyanka. Though film didn't fare well ,this song stands out in his filmography.

• Another notable song in this movie -Ullathai killathe.

On a similar tone, there are 2 more favorite numbers,

• One which is mostly forgotten now - Mississppi Nadhi Kulunga from Priyamanavale. As a song its average but I love the pairing of Vijay- Radhika choudhary. Often heard during childhood, I feel this rarely gets mentioned.
• Another is Thimsu Katta from Thirumalai 

Throughout his journey, Vijay is the only hero who has focussed on the entertaining dance numbers to the level that he doesnt even require vocals/singers.Prior to this, only other hero to do this is Kamal hassan.

Lets take on below song numbers -"Beat Of Sachien" or "Bigil Bigil Bigiluma" or "Thalaiva Thalaivaa - The Ecstasy Of Dance" or Varisu Dance theme. Only a star with self confidence on his dance can pull out these steps.

Bigil Theme

My most favorite is the 2 min dance sequence in Thalaiva. This is on par with Kamal & Revathi in Punnagai Mannan Theme, similar choreography around the piano (not sure if its coincidence)

Nilavu Pattu -Kannukul Nilavu

The entire movie is set in an unconventional space and as the movie didn't fare much that time, even the songs were faded without recognition. This is my favorite composition here in the album.

Song is set out as a challenge in the movie and moves on the slow pace 

Especially in the middle, there'll be a Jazz played along with various dancers and finally Vijay rocking at the end. Its a visual treat.

• Another notable song in this movie -Oru Naal Oru Kanavu

Finally i would love to conclude this session with another comfort song from Udaya.

I am skipping Kushi ,Shahjahan and Bhagavathy as they are everyone's favorite.Whatever I would add will be repetition as of Youth or Thirumalai. 

So am adding an another hidden gem here 

Enna Enna - Udhaya

I believe this was the last song before Vijay's career transformation and this movie was so delayed, that in the entire movie Vijay will be in prior to Thirumalai getup except this song.

Another Trivia: Vijay will be dancing in same shirt as he wore in a Ghilli scene.(Think he would've shot them both in same day).

My favorite portion of the song comes around -"நட்சத்திரப் பூவையெல்லாம் கூந்தலிலே சூடிக்கிட்டா"

• The song is paired with Vijay and Vivek . This is featured as the Intro song. I think Vijay is the only actor  in the recent times. who has shared screen presence with a comedian entirely in a dance sequence even allowing Vivek to perform in the song.".

In this blog, we are going to explore the signature steps and also some of the less remembered songs of Vijay and the aspects I liked in these songs.

Oodha Oodha Poo

A forgotten rendition in the recent times, 

Before Vijay -Simran , Vijay -Trisha there was an OG pair called Vijay -Rambha.

The pair rocked the multiple albums and favorite includes - Vanna Nilave , Ennavale (Ninathen Vandhai), Jalakku Jalakku (Endrendrum Kadhal) &  Sathi kadi (Sukran)

Set in dream sequence, Vaali has penned complex lines just like that with legendary

Hariharan and Bhavathrini providing the soul for the song & beautifully carried by the lead actors. 

Anytime I happen to listen to this song , I would stop by to enjoy Vijay's dance in this entire song.

I loved the lines 

"உன் மழை கூந்தல் மீது

என் மனப்பூவை வைத்தேன்

ஓர் உயிர் நூலை கொண்டு

இரு உடல் சேர தைத்தேன்"

Another notable song in this movie :

• Kangala Minnala(Endredrum Kadhal) - This is also a dream sequence and kind of reminiscient of above song but nevertheless its also packed with enjoyable moments.

 Lellalauku Lela -Aadhi

One of my comfort songs of all time. This is along the lines of the Ella Pugazhum, filled with positivity and fun.

When I even hear this song, I immediately get carried to Vijay's dance automatically like an unknown shoulder consoling next to us.This sequence is set like a drama with Manivannan's interruption and then moving onto next sequence.

when I hear the below lines, it reminds me how gracefully Vijay has carried the entire sequence.

"வெண்ணிலா ஒன்னே ஒன்னு சூரியன் ஒன்னே ஒன்னு

வாழ்கையும் ஒன்னே ஒன்னு வாழ்ந்து பாரம்மா

பூவென்றால் வாசம் எடு தீயென்றால் தீபம் எடு

எதிலுமே நன்மை உண்டு ஆழ்ந்து பாரம்மா"

Another notable song in this movie :

• Olli Olli Idupe  - A bubbly song carried by Vijay -Trisha Pairing. Though Trisha isn't a trained dancer like Vijay, together they make a lot of cute expressions spread across the entire song. It doesn't stick out in any mood of the song be it melody like "Kannum Kannum than" or fun song like "Olli Olli" or "Kattu Kattu" or high intense number like "Appadi Podu" or "Matta" song.

20 Kodi Nilavugal koodi

This is the definition of how a love song album should be, In other movies, i like one or two songs but this is the only vijay movie where I love the entire album.

Legendary Vijay Simran in lead role. The song is set in breezy note with Simran enjoying the rendition.

Most of my favorite Vijay songs has Simran as the co-star -Althotta Bhoopathi or Enna Enna (Udhaya) or June July Madhathil and Ennavo Ennavo (Priyamanavale)

I enjoyed this particular song so much that below lines will almost melt you.

"மானிட பிறவி என்னடி மதிப்பு உன் கால் விரல் நகமாய் இருப்பதே சிறப்பு".

One more moment i loved watching in this song is Everytime when vijay sings 

"நூறு கோடி பெண்கள் உண்டு உன் போல யாருமில்லையே ,ஆனால் கன்னி உந்தன் கண்கள் கண்கள் மட்டும் காணவில்லையே".

There'll be a rain only around Vijay while he's singing these lines.

Another notable song in this movie :

•  Thodu Thodu enave - I equally love this song along with earlier song, especially when the Rickshaw transforms into the chariot or the moment when the below lines come over,

நீச்சல்குளம் இருக்கு

நீரும் இல்லை

இதில் எங்கு நீச்சல் அடிக்க.?

அத்தர் கொண்டு

அதை நிரப்ப வேண்டும்

இந்த அல்லிராணி குளிக்க.!

The scene then shows water from plastic pot transforming into shower. Watch in Youtube to experience this vintage song.

• Megamai Vandhu Pogiren and Innisai Paadivarum are other mandatory mentions here.

Oru Kadhitham Ezuthinen (Rasigan)

Vijay's earliest song often being forgotten with recent hits. I remember this being the first song to feature the iconic hand hook step of vijay.

This version of vijay is even prior to Poove Unakkaga or Kadhaluku Mariyadhai.

Combined with SPB's soulful singing that matches with the minimal sequence that would only be appropriate for that period Vijay is what makes this song so special especially when he sings "Kadhali ennai kadhali".

The Adolescent Vijay especially in Rx bike is the forgotten version of him which I would like to revisit, Wish they would've recreated this vijay in GOAT movie in flashback.

Akkuthe Akkuthe - Nilave Vaa

To be frank, I love the Nilavee Nilavee song to the core but this song I love to mention as this song explores the mischievous side of Vijay compared to other songs. When he sings "We are Bad, Bad ,Bad boys". There's no other song during that time that would've connected with youth than this.

Everytime i hear the lines - "லேடீஸ் கேரேஜில் டராவல் பண்ண வேனும்,

அதுக்காக டி டி ஆர் ட்ரைனிங் எடுக்க வேனும்".

Or during the song closure, they are shown in professional tie but turns into a goof up moment

This is what i define as enjoying a Vijay song. Even a bad mood/day is lit up with this song.

Keelamal Kaiyile - Azhagiya Tamil Magan

When it comes to Azhagiya Tamil Magan (referred as ATM) , Rahman has setup a banger album along with extraordinary choreography by Prem Rakshith.

While everyone's favorite will be Ella Puzhagum, Pon magal vandhal and Valayapatti ,so instead am going to explain on other 2 favorite songs from the album that deserves equal love.

First is Melody song - Keelamal Kaiyile

Can a slow melody be this beautiful with cute dance steps and picturization ,especially the inital dance sequence and Vijay's expressions along the lines "En peyarai kuridum Un perum Kokilam"

As an audio song , it feels very slow but when it comes to video, its a 180° turn.

Dance and lead pairing compete with each other in this song that we don't even feel the slowness.

I love the lyrics everytime I listen along with the Vijay and Shreya's Choreography together 

Next time when you hear, notice the dance and the lines during below sequence

 

"மேற்கு திசையை நோக்கி நடந்தால் இரவு

கொஞ்சம் சீக்கிரம் வருமா
தூங்கும் தேவை ஏதும் இன்றி
கனவுகளும் கைகளில் விழுமா"

Next in sequence is Nee Marlin Manroe song.

A special mention for this because If you wanna enjoy Vijay's Swag then this is the song you need to look for.This man changes into complete stylish ,an exact opposite from Keelamal Kaiyile or Ella pugazhum.

You ought to enjoy his dance during the lines , he has owned this song.

"குளிர் இரவினில் கேம்ப்பைப் போட்டு
சுடச் சுடவென காய்ச்சலே ஊட்டு
வானரங்கள் ஆடிடா போலாம் வர்றியா"

This song is another dimension of Vijay being explored and if I recall, this song images were the wallpapers and posters of the movie as well.

A Hero With Thousand Steps - Part 1

"Follow your Bliss and the Universe will open doors, where there were only Walls" -Joseph Campbell

In 1992,  Tamil Cinema opened a door for 18 year old Vijay (also known as Thalapathy now).

In this blog, am exploring the gracefulness of the Actor Vijay and how he transforms the difficult steps on screen with an ease and the dance moments i enjoyed personally.

Vijay ~ The Journey

When Vijay entered the movie industry , the Senior actors -Rajini &Kamal  had moved onto experimental/ limited movie releases.

And his other senior contemporaries namely- Vijayakanth, Sarathkumar,Karthik,Prabhu concentrated more on performance/mass based roles.

Younger heroes that time- Ajith,Prashanth,Vikram,Surya,Vineeth,Vignesh,Abbas were onto Lover image roles.

People were looking for the gap left by Rajini ,The Entertainer who can peform comedy/dance numbers. Vijay utilized this gap with both Kadhalukku Mariyadhai & Poove Unakkaga.

Though above movies cemented the foundation, Thirumalai is the transformation of Today's Vijay.

Often when it comes to Vijay, sometimes his efforts are understated with Nepotism.

If Nepotism was a scale then Actors Vikram Prabhu ,Gautam Karthik & Shantanu would have been the iconic duo in Tamil but the success follows hard work.

Vijay ~ The Dancer

 

Vijay's Journey can comprised in three different steps -Skill,Talent and Intelligence.

As through the Vijay's Dance Journey , there were 4 stages of his acting & dance movement which I  have admired personally.

My Journey with Thalapathy started with Poove Unakaga (similar to all other 90s kids) -Oh Pyari Pani Puri song. From that moment I often watched his movies for the dance numbers.

Stage 1: The Budding Dancer - From Deva to Nilavee Vaa

Stage 2: The Gracious Dancer - From Thullatha Mananum Thullum to Vaseegera

Stage 3: The Energetic Ilaya Thalapathi - From Thirumalai to Bairavaa

Stage 4: Thalapathy ,The Senior - Mersal to GOAT

Through this blog, Am sharing the dance moments that I enjoyed as an audience and the experience on what made that song special.(not in sequence though)

Thamthakka Thimthakka - Thirumalai

This Song lives on rent free in my heart, no matter how many vijay movies can come over, none of them beats this song.

But why this song is so special ?

This is set as the Introduction Song for Vijay in Thirumalai alongside with Lawrence Master(Choreographer of this song).

The entire song setup is in Fast Forward moment with 4:27 Mins (if slowed to 24 frames, it'll be little be over 6+ mins).

It features 2 unique dance movements, Iconic "Veena" step is featured 3 times and the Hand movement step is presented multiple times throughout the song.

Vijay isn't the first actor to feature these moves, Chiranjeevi has attempted the "Veena" step in Daayi Daayi song (Indra) and the Hand movement performed earlier by Jr.Ntr in Naire Naire Song (Andrawala) but Vijay is the only actor to combine these 2 steps in same song which speaks for his skill and Talent.

Moreover, he does so effortlessly compared to Chiranjeevi or Jr.Ntr. While he's on screen we cant even move our eyes onto Lawrence dancing nearby. 

Not just him, even with Prabhudeva, our focus always remain with Vijay. Such is his screen presence. 

IMO, Vijay is the only actor who enjoys the song and presents cute facial expressions/smile than following the dance steps mechanically. I feel this is the reason why we also get along with his dance. (Love what you do).

You can see this Vaadi Vaadi song or Mersal Arasan or Google Google (the smile at end) as well.

Another notable song in this movie :

• Vaadi yama Jakkama 

Doddabetta Road Mela -Vishnu

One of the blockbuster dance numbers early in Vijay's career (sung by Vijay & Shobha Chandrasekhar). As mentioned above, he flows through the entire song like a river. Though there are cuts in song, you rarely feel it. IMO this song changed the definition of item songs until that moment in Tamil cinema where the focus turns on hero as well.

Another notable songs in this movie :

• Aaja Re (this song is specifically for Vijay's expressions where he's matching Mano's voice).
• Singara Kannuku- Another notable Peppy number from this movie.
• OK OK - Not sure if I compliment Singer Suresh Peters or Vijay here , a Vintage Vijay song.

Oh Pyari Pani Puri -Poove Unakaga

This as well an Hero Introduction song, the song is added to movie in Post production as all other songs are melodies.

Featured in famous Chennai locations in and around Besant Nagar.

Be it multiple dress walk moments, the sequence where Vijay "Thaguma Thaguma",Every movement in this song is specifically choregraphed for Vijay. No other song released during 1997 had this dance movement.

 

Another notable song in this movie :

• Sollamale Yaar parthathu - Vijay proved that even slow paced dance can be entertaining with this song (especially the sequence that starts with Malligai Poo vasam vandhu). Even when Vijay doesnt dance, his expressions carries the entire song.
• Chicklet Chicklet song - Vijay's comic timing infused in choreography would make this song special

Althotta Bhoopathi - Youth

Vijay's Dance numbers will compulsorily contain this. Kabilan's first song for Vijay with Simran in Guest role.

IMO , Vijay has good pairing with Simran ,Jyothika and Trisha compared to other heroines and Simran has highest chemistry while pairing with Vijay.

This song is a pure Theatre Experience 

In this song, Simran would've danced on par with Vijay's energy. 

"Kadhal Kalyana Saami Senjane da , Saami endha saami , andha saami Kandhasamy."

"Thoondil Sikkatha Meenu Onnu"

Simple lines but energetic dance movements

 

Another notable song in this movie :

•  Sakkarai Nilave - Man, this song is bundle of emotional Vijay. The way he dances being rejected along with iconic lines -"Unakum Enakum ellam pidika ennai en pidikathu endrai"
• Santhosam Santhosam - Not particularly for the dance , but for the love and Vijay being in it. I felt this has heavily been overshadowed by Althotta Bhoopathi during that time.

Bombay City -Rasigan

Apart from being the first song of Vijay, the vintage vijay dance moments is what that makes the song so special.

With respect to singing, he would've matched with legendary singer Chitra.

The young Vijay with excited expressions (when he utters "Parthale Kaichal Varume") is what makes the song so special.

This dance had all possibilities of turning into awkward/vulgar moment given the placement in the movie but Vijay's dance is what makes the grace here.

One of my favorite Vintage Vijay movies.

Ennoda Laila -Badri

Vijay's Favorite Peppy number.

This song is a testament on why you should enjoy a Vijay song.

He doesn't just dance, He emotes.

Vijay's dance moment while singing "Manasa valaiya virichen andha maina mattaliye" , Man he's not dancing in movie, he's enjoying 

Also the way he gave thumbs up or lifts the collar, not sure if its choregraphed or added by Vijay while in sequence. 

He adds in additional expressions relevant to the song without spoiling or overdoing it.

Another notable song in this movie :

• Kadhal Sollavthu & Angel Vandhale -No heavy dance sequence , the smiling breezy Kadhaluku mariyadhai steps. The way he smooches Bhoomika while singing "Nee mattum than Sakhiye" adds up the cute moments. Vijay feels Live while performing the sequence

These moments immerse us into Vijay's character within that movie universe not just an external movie audience
